Researchers have developed a detonation power plant with an increased duration of explosions, which allows you to develop hypersonic speed with low fuel consumption.

Impulse detonation engines operating on chemical and nuclear fuel create traction due to pulses from exothermic reaction explosive waves. However, due to their instability and their short exposure time, it is necessary to produce many intensive explosions (every several milliseconds) to maintain high speed. This requires a huge amount of fuel, which makes such engines impractical.

Now scientists from the University of Central Florida, together with the US Naval Study Lab, presented a new model of a hypersonic reaction chamber with a system of inclined detonation. In it, the explosive reaction is descended by ramp at an angle of 30 degrees, so after detonation of fuel inside the engine, shock waves remain fixed, and not rotate, as usual.

Experiments have shown that such a system increases the duration of the explosion in the chamber to 3 seconds, significantly reducing fuel consumption, and allows you to develop the speed of 17 movines (about 21 thousand km / h). Currently, the power plant is at the initial development phase and needs to be improved, as well as the selection of the optimal combustible mixture.
