Researchers have developed a huge acoustic installation, which even in arid areas can increase the amount of precipitation by 17%.

Over the past year, a team from Beijing University Cynchu conducted an experiment on changing the weather on Tibetan Plateau. In this region, the proportion of the conversion of the atmospheric pair into precipitation is noticeably below the average of 20% in the country. To solve the problem of drought, engineers decided to try to influence the clouds with low-frequency sound waves.

The created device is a huge loudspeaker running from a diesel engine, compressing air to 10 atmospheres. The system sends audio signals to the sky with a volume of 160 dB. Despite the high level of noise, a person practically does not hear it because of a low frequency of 50 Hz.

When the sound reaches clouds, its strength decreases to about 30 dB. These oscillations stimulate the formation of the merger of small particles of steam in a drop of larger. According to the results of the study, in areas with a radius of about 500 m, where the device tests were carried out, after two-hour exposure, the amount of precipitation increased by 11-17%, compared with the surrounding grounds.
