Displays from the new electronic paper will not tire the eyes like modern screens


Researchers have developed a new type of screen, which provides the same image quality as the modern display, but consumes 10 times less energy and does not tire the eyes.

In traditional digital screens, highlighting is used to display text or images. They work perfectly in the room, but under the bright sunlight to consider anything very difficult on them. Previously, scientists have created an ultra-thin flexible material that can reproduce all the same colors as the LED screen, but perceived by the eyes like ordinary paper through the use of ambient light.

This so-called «electronic paper» is already applied now in some tablets, but they can well display only black and white colors, which strongly limits their use. Now the team of engineers from Technological University of Chalmers has improved technology, significantly increasing the quality of the display of the color palette.

As a basis, they took the already known porous nanostructured material containing tungsten trioxide, gold and platinum, but changed the design of the reflective screen. Scientists have placed a component that makes the material with electrically conductive, under a pixel nanostructure, which is playing color, and not above it, as it was before.

This change has opened a pixel surface to a straight outline, so a person sees the color much more clearly. In the thickness, this reflective screen is comparable to paper, and when working only the tenth of the energy of the modern LED display consumes. Eyes are also significantly less tired of viewing it, because they are perceived as colored paper.

According to the team, within three months, the technology can be adapted for smartphone displays, tablets and other digital devices, as well as energy-efficient outdoor advertising posters. Although the «electronic paper» uses rare and valuable metals, but they need only a very small quantity, which makes the cost of their production comparable to modern screens.
